Hedge Trimming

Trimming, reducing and reshaping garden and boundary hedges.

A hedge that is trimmed regularly stays dense and manageable. One that has been left for a few years gets tall, wide and bare at the bottom, and needs a harder cut to bring it back.

What hedge work covers

Regular trimming

Cutting the sides and top back to the line, keeping the hedge dense and tidy.

Height and width reduction

Taking an overgrown hedge back down to a manageable size. Some hedges respond well to a hard cut; some conifers do not regrow from old wood, and we will tell you which yours is before cutting.

Boundary hedges

Hedges along a road, a lane or a neighbour's garden, kept clear of paths, sightlines and the boundary.

Clearing the cuttings

All the arisings collected and taken away.

Before we cut

  • We check for active nests. It is an offence to damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird while it is in use or being built, so nesting season can delay hedge work.
  • We agree the height and line with you before we start.

Common questions

Problems we are asked about

How tall can my neighbour's hedge legally be?

There is no single legal height, but the council can step in. If a hedge is two or more mostly evergreen or semi-evergreen trees or shrubs, over two metres tall and affecting your enjoyment of your home or garden, you can complain to the council once you have tried to settle it informally. A fee may apply.

Questions we get asked about hedge trimming

Can hedges be cut in spring and summer?

They can, but you have to check for active nests first: damaging or destroying a nest in use is an offence. If there is one, that part of the hedge waits.

My neighbour's hedge is too tall. What can I do?

Talk to them first. If it is two or more mostly evergreen or semi-evergreen trees or shrubs over two metres tall and it affects your enjoyment of your home, the council can consider a high hedge complaint once you have tried to settle it informally.
