Tree Felling & Dismantling

Taking a tree down safely, whether it can be dropped in one piece or has to come down in sections.

Some trees have room to be felled in one go. Most garden trees do not: there is a house, a fence, a greenhouse or a neighbour's roof in the way, and the tree has to be taken down piece by piece from the top, with each section cut and lowered under control.

What tree removal involves

Straight felling

Where there is a clear drop zone, the tree is cut at the base and directed to fall where it should.

Sectional dismantling

Climbing or working from a platform, taking the crown and then the stem down in manageable pieces, lowering them on ropes where anything below needs protecting.

Clearing up

Timber cut to length or taken away, brash chipped, and the site left tidy. The stump can be left, cut low or ground out.

Before any tree comes down

  1. Check for protection: a Tree Preservation Order or a conservation area means the council has to be asked or notified first.
  2. Check for wildlife: nesting birds and bat roosts are protected by law, and either can change the timing.
  3. Plan the work: access, the drop zone or lowering points, overhead cables and anything underneath that needs protecting.
  4. Quote in writing: what is coming down, what happens to the wood and whether the stump is included.

Common questions

Problems we are asked about

Can bats stop a tree being cut down?

They can delay or change the work. All bat species and their roosts are protected by law, and the government lists cutting down or removing branches from a mature tree as an activity that can harm bats. If a tree might hold a roost, it needs checking, and if harm cannot be avoided a licence from Natural England is needed.

Questions we get asked about tree felling & dismantling

Do I need permission to cut down a tree in my garden?

Not usually, unless it has a Tree Preservation Order or you are in a conservation area. A protected tree needs the council's consent; in a conservation area you normally have to give the council six weeks' notice. Your council can tell you which applies.

Can you take down a tree next to the house?

Yes. That is what sectional dismantling is for: the tree comes down in pieces, lowered under control, rather than being felled in one go.

What happens to the wood?

Your choice. We can cut it into rings or logs and leave it, or take it all away with the chippings.
