Stump Grinding

Grinding out tree stumps below ground so the space can be used again.

A stump left after a tree comes down gets in the way of mowing, paving and planting, and some species send up new shoots from it for years. Grinding takes it out below ground level without digging out the whole root plate.

What stump grinding involves

Grinding

A stump grinder cuts the stump and the main roots near it down into chippings, below the surface.

Access

Smaller machines go through a garden gate; we will ask about the access width when you send us the job.

The chippings

Left in the hole as mulch, or taken away and the hole backfilled with soil, depending on what you plan to do with the space.

Before we grind

  • We ask about underground services: drains, pipes and cables near the stump.
  • If the tree died of honey fungus, the stump and roots are where the fungus feeds, so removing them matters more.

Common questions

Problems we are asked about

Should I grind out a tree stump or leave it?

Leave it if it is out of the way and the tree was healthy. Grind it out if you want to use the space, if it keeps sprouting, or if the tree died of honey fungus: the RHS says the only effective remedy for honey fungus is to dig out and destroy the infected stump and roots.

Questions we get asked about stump grinding

Should I grind out a stump or leave it?

Leave it if it is out of the way and the tree was healthy. Grind it if you want to use the space, if it is sprouting, or if the tree was killed by honey fungus, which feeds on dead stumps and roots.

How deep does stump grinding go?

Deep enough to get the stump below the surface for what you want to do next, whether that is turf, planting or paving. Tell us the plan and we will grind to suit.
